All you need to know about Contactless Facial Recognition System

People and the entrepreneurs had never been this careful, health conscious and hygienic before; all credits go to COVID-19. There are so many things to be listed out as the impact of this lockdown, that we couldn’t count with just our fingers. The major one would be… yes you guessed it right!!. It is business.

And that drastic step is contactless attendance system or in this place, it is Facial Recognition


Almost every one of us have smartphones and the term Facial Recognition is not a new sound to your ears. But the thing about this is, that companies have decided to bring out “Contactless Attendance Facial Recognition System” as an employee attendance system instead of the usual biometrics.

Instead, it just requires the employees to stand in front of the system to help it recognize that you are present for the day. The Facial Recognition is just not similar to facial recognition in mobile phones. In smartphones, there will be an option to whether you want that feature or not. But here, you have to face it buddy. 


So, coming to our business, the Face Recognition employee software works on three different stages such as Detection, Analysis and Recognition. 


Detection: As the name suggests, this is used to detect the face when you are in front of it. To make it more simple, it is just like the Auto Focus feature in your phone’s camera app.


Analysis: Analysis can also be called as mapping. This stage is used to map your facial features. The steps involve the measurement of the distance between your two eyes, the distance between your nose and mouth, and also the shape of the chin. After measuring these parameters, they are converted into numbers or strings or points. These are called “Faceprints”.


Recognition: Recognition is the stage where after analysis the confirmation of the face takes place. This is the identification of a person just like in the smartphones used as a security feature. 

But the disadvantage is that, when the data should be identified correctly, the data fed should be equally right.


The system’s accuracy actually depends upon the dataset fed into it during the analysis and recognition steps. The system would not be able to identify the new face if the face doesn’t match the database and thus even the well known person would have to be kicked out. 

How does it work?

The actual detection phase starts with an algorithm and the “training”, should be done appropriately. Example, if there are a number of employees in a company, but there are not enough features for the system to match, that is where the system fails. 


Identification: This is the last process where the software is trained with a data set of a person starting from mug shots to social media pictures. The software then starts to identify the person by comparing with the several other faces from the database. The system then lists out the faces according to the accuracy.

That is Facial Recognition  that detects a mask. Who would have even imagined that this breakthrough would bring in so much advanced features. 


So, coming to the point, this system can also look for the person whether they are maintaining social distance or not. The workflow would be similar to that of the usual facial recognition process except for the checking of mask and social distancing. 


The system first recognises the face of the employee, and sees if any of the two parameters are not matched and then sends an alert. The attendance of that employee would be marked only when they match with the parameters.  


At the end of the day, no matter what technology it is that we bring, it all depends upon which way society has an impact because of it.
